Call it the Don Draper affect. Or maybe it’s the availability of That Girl on Amazon Prime. Whatever the case, Mid Century Modern style is hot again — smoking hot!
And lucky for you we consistently carry a bevy of the stuff — and you’re gonna really dig it.
In our lowest level we’ve dedicated a serious amount of space just to Mid Century Modern — living and dining room furnishings and accessories, kids’ playroom furnishings, patio and garden, and the hipsters essential barroom. Basically it’s fat city!
But we don’t stop there.
Sprinkled throughout our main level we also have plenty more, from office and home furnishings to lots and lots of accessories — lamps, fabrics, drapery, pillows, cookware and table settings, books, posters, stereo consoles, records, nicknacks and hey, we even have duds to wear so you can completely live the Mid Century look anywhere you are.
So what should you be looking for in Mid Century Modern to deck out your pad with the coolest look? Here are five hot trends to watch for right now:
A Central Feature
One great piece can utterly define a space and give a solid launch pad for the whole room. We recently had a Mid Century chrome-framed red leather couch and love seat that were so striking that they immediately took your breath away.
With such graphic intensity and a bold mix of materials, they could sit in a room alone and you’d never think it needed anything else. BUT…you can play off of that design focus and with a few other striking features — a framed print, a fabulous chandelier, an animal print rug — amp up the cool factor with just a few other touches.
A Great Accent (or two)
Investment in a key piece is not always feasible for everyone but you can still get “the look” with a few well chosen accent pieces.
Start small — a brightly colored vase or sculptural glass ware can cut a striking figure and completely define a corner of a room or even a place in the center, like an ashtray on a coffee table (you don’t even have to be a smoker)!
Look for color, shape, and scale and then build on that as you acquire more Mid Century Modern accent pieces.
Another way to start small is with a great lamp, a unique trash can, or a two-tiered end table with sleek lines and wood inlay.
Since your pieces don’t have to be matchy-matchy, you can combine different pieces by paying attention to line and design and working to build your collection slowly.
It’s All About The Vinyl
Being a retro shop, we love anything analog. So the fact that the crackling warm sound of spinning vinyl is back in vogue makes us happy. And yes, we’ve got plenty of records for you to sift through (as does our neighbor at Black Swan Books).
Let’s go one better though and play that vinyl on a Mid-Century sound system conveniently packaged in one cool, smooth, outrageously beautiful console. Clean lines. Gorgeous wood. Those funky fabric covered speakers. Just like the Grundig-Majestic 1959 Stereo pictured above.
We’ve got a couple of different consoles on hand here, but trust me, this is something you want to be on the prowl for to suite-out your man cave, chick hut, or family room in the ultimate in style.
Another way to start your Mid Century Modern collection at a smaller scale and more affordably is to pick one area to concentrate on like building out a home library, or re-doing the bathroom.
Even better is to make your table top shine at meal time. Look for platters, dish ware, serving containers, cookware, barware, martini and highball glasses, water pitchers, etc.
If you find a complete-enough set — snag it. Don’t worry if it’s not “service for 12” because, you know, how many huge formal dinner parties do you throw, anyway?
If you like the way it looks — nice graphic design, a sculptural shape, a bold color statement, excellent glasses — then you’ll always find a way to use it, even combining it eclectically with other pieces as you go.
Take a Seat
Just one great chair can make you beam from ear to ear. Mid Century Modern chairs are so fun because they come in so many shapes, sizes, moods, materials, and purposes.
Patio chairs can be elegant or goofball and still make a sophisticated design statement outdoors.
Put an Eames lounge chair and ottoman in your cozy corner and you’ll love the comfort while basically always feeling amazing sitting in it. And there’s not a soul alive who won’t compliment it. It just says “cool.”
Dining chairs can run from the Chromcraft ribbed vinyl to brilliant Danish wood to sculpted plywood (yes!) to those funky molded plastic chairs that remind you of school.
A side chair or club chair for the living room will have either bulk and graphic intensity or be understated yet unmistakable.
All it takes is one chair, though, to not only set the mood in your place, but also to give you the bug for more.
Because once you start decorating with Mid Century Modern the sky’s the limit. That’s why we love it. And that’s why we’ve got so much of it. Come check us out and see what I mean!
