Okay, this time when I say “it’s finally spring” please, weather, don’t make a liar out of me! It actually does seem, with trees flowering and leafing out, with balmy days, and enough sun to finally feel like we can kick back and soak it in, that we’re truly on the other side of spring at last!
And nothing says spring like Mother’s Day.
It’s a Sunday full of brunches, flowers, family gatherings and, miracle of miracles, everyone putting on something pretty nice to wear! It’s a great holiday — especially for getting pics of everyone looking spiffy.
And then there’s the gifts.
Something special for a special mom adds a little extra brightness to the day. And since each mom is so unique we think you’d do well to scour antiques and vintage offerings for the perfect gift for your mother, grandmother, or the “mom” figure in your life.
Another fun idea is to come by for a nostalgia tour after your brunch or before your Sunday dinner. Mom might really love checking out a couple of centuries worth of antiques and vintage items from pop culture to high art right here in our shop.
But if that’s not possible, you’ve got this week to come by yourself and discover that must-have find that will delight mom’s heart. So here’s five fun ideas for great Mother’s Day gifts that are as unique as she is.
1. Simply Bejeweled
We’ve got cases and cases of fabulous antique, vintage, and costume jewelry. But not soooo many cases of jewelry that it’s just plain too much to take in, like you see in some shops. We don’t want you to wonder, “Where do I even begin?” We want it to be easy for you to find.
I’d say we’ve hit the Goldilocks spot on jewelry — enough to give you fabulous choices, different styles, and one-of-a-kind finds without overwhelming you. Come in and see what we mean — maybe you’ll find that perfect cameo brooch or gorgeous pin, a strand of pearls, chunky costume beads with attitude, or a delicate ring, jeweled watch, or Southwestern earrings.
Mom’s a jewel, give her one that sparkles hard!
There’s always something that a mom collects. Maybe she loves great vases to show off her flower arranging (or bouquets from her adoring family). Maybe she likes figurines, like Llandro, or Goebel or Hummel, or animal figures or Christmas-themed pieces or even, yes even, clowns…
Whatever quirky or traditional or branded ceramic style your mom likes, we’re bound to have examples here in the shop or something else she might like in the ceramics and porcelain world.
3. Get Your Art On
On our two lower levels we’ve got a trove of great wall art choices — photographs, oil paintings, framed prints, hanging textiles and more.
Maybe she likes a good hunt country scene or other traditional landscape and people paintings. Perhaps she prefers a floral still life. Maybe she’s into something cute-n-country. Or maybe it’s all abstract, avant-garde, cutting edge stuff for her.
Our selection of art pieces is huge. But in addition to that, upstairs in our art gallery — The Artisans Loft — we’ve got a new show opening on Friday, May 11 at 6pm. You can see the show prior to that, but you can also come out to our fun Opening — “Destination Art” — on Friday to peruse art offerings and enjoy some social time. Staunton Antiques will be open late that night too, until 9pm.
4. Drink Up
If mom’s a tea drinker then a nice addition to her chintz tea cups might hit the spot. But maybe she’d like something a little heftier — in which case pour her brew into a pilsner glass and her cocktail in some of the best Mid Century martini glasses you’ve ever seen!
Our barware selection is extensive but so are our backyard patio iced tea or lemonade pieces. Something from the 60s or 70s says hipster and something earlier says casual elegance.
Find her a little something special to whet her whistle!
5. Feel That
Lots of mothers find their happy place with textiles.
If she sews she probably loves special fabric finds and we’ve got some from across the 20th century that she’d probably just love — traditional prints, Mid Century barkcloths, whimsical prints, and more.
Or perhaps fine linens are her thing. Maybe a set of damask napkins, a handmade lace tablecloth, or finely crafted placemats.
To really make a statement check out our many rugs — dhurries, wool contemporaries, orientals, and small hooked throw rugs.
Whatever it is (besides her unconditional love and sunny demeanor) that makes your mom special, we’ve got something she’s likely to treasure and to treasure even more for its antique or vintage patina, its sense of history, its age like a fine wine.
Come in and check it out — we’d love to see you!
