The days leading up to our newest art shows truly are a flurry of activity — hanging art, getting and preparing food, coordinating with musicians, setting the opening night scene within the gallery just right, getting the publicity out, and of course, all the unexpected things that pop up to take care of.
And I love it!
I’m especially looking forward to this Friday’s Winter Fest Opening — on February 8, 2019 from 6-9pm — because this is my first show that encompasses everything about the process, from selection of artwork (with a committee) to hanging the art and readying the opening.
I started the job as curator late this past fall, but came in after the show was already underway. It’s been so rewarding to now see and participate in the entire process.
New and Different
Speaking of which, there are some exciting new things about the Winter Fest show.
We’ve added needle felting, mixed media, quilting, and basket making to the list of mediums represented in the gallery.
Another big difference with this show is the way artwork is presented. Instead of having an artist’s work spread throughout the gallery as we did in the past, this time each artist has a designated space where all of their work is shown together as a group. The result is a fresh, streamlined look where it’s easy to focus on one person’s work. I can’t wait for you to see it!
The Artisans Loft is unlike any gallery in the region. We have a wide variety of types of art, ranging from funky welded steel sculptures and functional fine craft to representational oil paintings and more.
For some of the artists, this is their first time exhibiting while others are seasoned professionals with many years of experience in the art world.
Liveliness is the watchword here, too. Ours is definitely not a gallery where you’re afraid to talk above a whisper — come take a look and check out the four distinct gallery spaces at the Artisans Loft. Each space is filled with original, hand made artwork, plenty of heart, soul, and artistic expression, and that sense of community that is so indicative of the little gem that is Staunton, Virginia.
Hope to see you at the opening (ps, the Antique Center* stays open late that night, too)!
Winter Fest runs through April 2019. We’re open seven days a week; M-Th 11am-5pm; Fri & Sat 11am-6pm; Sunday 10am-5pm.
